MLB's first $400 million player? Bryce Harper says 'don't sell me short'

Will Bryce Harper become baseball's first $400 million player when he hits free agency following the 2018 season?

Don't sell him short, says the Washington Nationals right fielder and National League MVP.

Asked during an interview on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, Harper indicated he might get a record free-agent contract even beyond the $400 million deal that has been the subject of speculation.

“Yeah, I mean I don’t really think about that stuff. I just try to play the years out and do everything I can to help my team win,” the 23-year-old Harper said. “But don’t sell me short. That’s what you’re doing right now to me, so don’t do that.

“I’m looking forward to just playing this year, just looking forward to playing the next couple years,” he added. “And I think all that stuff will play out.”

In 2015, Harper batted .330 with with an NL-leading 42 home runs and 99 RBI. He also led the NL with 118 runs, .460 on-base percentage, .649 slugging percentage and 1.109 on-base plus slugging percentage.
