Watch drone footage of Washington wildfire damage
OKANOGAN COUNTY, Wash. — The Carleton Complex fire in Washington state has burned down 200 homes and resulted in the death of one resident. A local video production company sent a drone into the smoky air above the destroyed subdivisions.
The video, provided by Chelan HD Productions, gives a birds-eye view of the damage. There's a kind of eery calm — due largely to the absence of sound recording. But mostly what one sees is human habitations in ashes and ruins, with only a pile of warped siding and bricks at sites where there used to be houses.
Firefighting crews were hoping cooler, damper weather would help them contain the fires to the east of Seattle, which were 2% contained Monday.
The Carleton Complex had reached 243,000 acres (380 square miles) on Sunday, making it the largest in Washington history, according to the Seattle Times. It started as four smaller fires sparked by lightning July 14.
