Stocks close mixed but post strong 2Q gains
Stocks closed out a strong second quarter on a mixed note Monday.
Despite lackluster trading on the last day, the major indexes posted their sixth straight quarterly gain as the S&P 500 jumped 4.7% in the second quarter.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 25.24, or 0.2% to 16,826.60. The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 0.73, or 0.04% to 1960.23.
The Nasdaq composite index jumped 10.25, or 0.2%, to 4408.18 and was trading at a 14-year high. The Nasdaq surged 5% for the quarter.
The Dow also gained for the quarter but lagged the other indexes, posting a gain of 2.2%.
Stocks remain close to all-time highs after advancing in the second quarter amid signs that the U.S. economy is gradually strengthening after a winter slowdown. The long stretch of gains for stocks has left some investors wary.
"We are cautious. We see a little bit of a pullback here because we haven't seen one for quite some time," said Sean Lynch, managing director of global equity and research strategy for Wells Fargo private bank.
Overseas, European markets were mixed as Germany's DAX index gained 0.2% to 9833.07. But London's FTSE 100 index dropped 0.2% to 6743.94 and France's CAC 40 fell 0.3% to 4422.84
Japan's Nikkei index jumped 0.4% to 15,162.10 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.1% to 23,190.72.
