Peter Jackson kind of announces that he'll direct 'Doctor Who'

Peter Jackson is a self-proclaimed Whovian (proudly displaying the seventh Doctor's outfit in his house in New Zealand and even casting former Doctor Who Sylvester McCoy as a wizard in The Hobbit), so why has he never directed an episode of the Doctor Who before?

Neil Gaiman has (twice), and David Tennant was such a Doctor Who fanboy that he became the Doctor himself, and even married the fifth Doctor's daughter, Georgia Moffett (she played his daughter in the show too, but -- ah we won't get into it).

Jackson has been rumored to take up a directing gig with the BBC sci-fi show time and time again, and now he's just fueling the fire. Jackson released an adorable little sketch on his Facebook Sunday that showed him polishing his many Oscars (as you do), and chatting with his daughter about Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat's incessant emails to him, when who should appear but the Doctor himself, looking a bit befuddled and paranoid. Jackson brushes off Capaldi's wandering Doctor as yet another crazy Who fan, but then a Dalek chases him out and Jackson is none the wiser.

But at least, he took his letter, right? So we can expect that Peter Jackson-directed episode-turned-three-movie-franchise in about ... 2 years?
