In 2002, Maria Sharapova posed with an 8-year-old Eugenie Bouchard

In 2002, Maria Sharapova was a 15-year-old star-in-the-making, quietly playing in her first professional tournaments with a ranking hovering in the mid-hundreds. Though pegged to be a future star, she wouldn’t burst onto the scene for another two years, when she stunned Serena Williams in the Wimbledon final and became an overnight sensation.

Before that happened, Sharapova had a chance encounter with an 8-year-old Eugenie Bouchard and the two snapped a picture together. Now, 12 years later, they’ll face each other in a Grand Slam semifinal.

Sharapova advanced to the semis after storming back from a 6-1 first-set loss to Serena-slayer Garbine Muguruza. Bouchard held her nerve to earn a tense three-set win over Carla Suarez Navarro.

The pair have played twice before, including in last year’s French Open second-round, with Sharapova winning both matches in straight sets.

When Bouchard was 18, she signed a deal with Nike to wear Sharapova’s clothing line. According to the BBC, Sharapova handpicked Bouchard for the honor.
