Scion introduces its first release of a custom FR-S

NEW YORK -- For more than a year, Toyota's youthful Scion division has counted on its FR-S sports car to get customers' hearts racing. Now it's making some moves to try to keep them racing.

It has created the first "Release Series" version of FR-S, a customized version with extra parts from both Japan and the U.S. to keep the car fresh and distinctive. The car is being shown here at the New York Auto Show.

Most dramatically, the fast car gets a nine-piece aerodynamics kit to give it a ground-hugging look and make it look even faster. The springs are lowered, there's a racier exhaust tip system and push button start.

"FR-S enthusiasts will appreciate the side spoilers and lowered stance that deliver a look and feel meant for the track, at a price meant for them," says Doug Murtha, head of the Scion division.

The car will be priced at $30,000, plus a $795 delivery fee. Each car will be individually numbered -- one through 1,500. They come to dealerships in August.
