Wild waterspouts: A pair of waterspouts spin near Great Isaac Cay, a small island in the Bahamas. Although they form in different ways, waterspouts are tornadoes over water and usually can be seen in tropical areas where thunderstorms occur frequently.

Florida fogbow: A fogbow appears as the morning fog lifts on Sanibel Island, Fla., last week. Similar in shape to a rainbow, but much less colorful, a fogbow can be seen when there is thin fog and fairly bright sunshine.

Desert snow: Snow coats the mountains and cactus near Tucson at sunrise last Thursday, following the storm that dumped several inches of snow on the Arizona desert.

Troubled sky in Texas: A layer of clouds undulate in the skies above Dallas Ft. Worth airport last week.

An "I" in the sky: The sun and its reflection take the shape of the letter i at sunset in Marco Island, Fla., earlier this month.

Michigan wonder: A halo and a pair of sundogs appear around the sun over Lake St. Clair in Michigan. Sundogs are also known as parhelion, which is Greek for "beside the sun." The photo was taken from about 12,000 feet.

Snowroller surprise: A "snowroller" appears following a blizzard in North Dakota earlier this month. This rare weather phenomena occurs when strong winds roll up a layer of snow like a piece of carpet.

Sunset anvil: An anvil cloud spreads out above a thunderstorm over southern Missouri last June. The photo was taken from about 35,000 feet.

Iced over in Michigan: The Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids, Mich., is frozen over on a 4-degree day in January.

Frozen sunrise: The sun rises over Lake Superior in Duluth, Minn., on a frigid day last month. The temperature was 16 degrees below zero and steam fog can be seen hovering above the lake.

Contrail shadow: The sun casts a shadow from a contrail onto a layer of clouds beneath in Washington, Pa., last September.

Burmese beauty: Evening haze settles over Bagan, Burma, earlier this month. The average high temperature in Bagan this time of year is in the low 90s.

Sundog has its day: A sundog (right) appears in the sky over Malden, Mass., in October. Sundogs are patches of light that appear to the right, left, or both sides of the sun, and are caused by sunlight refracting through ice crystals. They are thought to get their name from their position relative to the sun, heeling at the right or left side of their "master."

Texas thunder: A lone thunderstorm catches the rays of the setting sun in southeastern Texas in August.

Desert rainbow: A rainbow appears as a thunderstorm builds just west of the Las Vegas Valley last month.

Curious cloud: A roll cloud appears above Millington Airport in Tennessee in June. Roll clouds can extend from horizon to horizon and tend to "roll" around a horizontal axis.

Rolling thunder: A roll cloud appears in the sky above Magnolia Harbor, Mass., in August, just before a thunderstorm came through. Roll clouds are long, low, tube-shaped clouds that are relatively rare.

Southwest cirrus: Ethereal cirrus clouds dance in the skies above Scottsdale, Ariz., in June. Cirrus are the highest of the primary cloud varieties and are composed entirely of ice crystals.

San Diego sky: A layer of altocumulus clouds cover the sky on a late spring afternoon. Altocumulus are mid-level clouds, which usually form at heights of 6,500 to 20,000 feet above the ground.

UFO over Louisiana? A massive cloud casts a shadow onto a lower cloud layer in June. The cloud could be a developing (or dissapating) anvil cloud from a thunderstorm. The photo was taken over Louisiana from a height of about 30,000 feet.
