Fishermen catch a nightmare-inducing goblin shark in the Gulf of Mexico

Shrimp fisherman accidentally caught one of the rarest and most terrifying animals in the world last month in the Gulf of Mexico near Key West, Florida. Inside their shrimp net was an 18-foot-long goblin shark, which hasn’t been spotted in the Gulf for 10 years. The crew took a few photos of the shark and released it back into the water, and later reported the catch to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The fisherman that snapped the photo of the shark, Carl Moore, didn’t want to get close to it.

Via the Houston Chronicle:

“I didn’t even know what it was. I didn’t get the tape measure out because that thing’s got some wicked teeth. They could do some damage…. The guys at NOAA said I’m probably one of only 10 people who’ve seen one of those alive.”
