It was a close race, but Meb Keflezighi crossed the finish line in 2:08.37 to become the first American male to win the Boston Marathon since 1983. He edged out Kenya’s Wilson Chebet in the last few miles, who at one point was only six seconds behind.

Keflezighi ran mile 25 under five minutes at 4:59. Incredible.

Keflezighi got emotional after he crossed the finish line. From USA TODAY Sports’ Kelly Whiteside on the scene:

He looked up to the sky, then kissed the ground three times. He took a bow, then emotion won out as he put his hands over his face and broke into tears.

Per the Associated PressKeflezighi wore the names of four victims of last year’s bombings on his race bib.

Written in marker in small, neat letters in each corner were Krystle, Lingzi, Martin and Sean.

Krystle Campbell, Lu Lingzi and Martin Richard were killed in the bombings during last year’s race, while MIT Officer Sean Collier was killed a few days later during the search for the suspects.

Announcers noted during the race that if Keflezighi won, he wanted the national anthem to be played at the finish line. If that happens later on, it will certainly be an emotional moment at the site of last year’s tragedy.
