Brokenhearted farmer donates millions for lost love

To a farmer there is no love, like the love for his land. That was true for Curt Chergosky, until he found the love of a woman, who shared his love for the land. It was the talk of Jackson County, Minnesota when he, a bachelor farmer pushing 50, fell for the newly-hired county 4-H coordinator, Andrea Ruesch.

Chergosky, a member of the county fair board, had plenty of opportunities to cross paths with Reusch at the county's extension office. As the months went on, everybody noticed how the spark between the two of them began to shine brighter. "Curt started coming into this office all the time and we made fun of her so bad, but she didn't really get what was going on," said Brittany Koch, a former coworker of Reusch's.

But soon enough, Reusch caught on and the two became an item. Seven months later, they were engaged.

Chergosky and Reusch shared a love for each other and the land they worked. While farming beside each other the two would talk about their future together and what they would name their children.

But three months before their wedding day, life took a tragic turn. One day, while weaning calves, Reusch suddenly fell ill. She went into the house and asked Chergosky to call an ambulance.

When Chergosky got to the hospital, the doctor was waiting with heartbreaking news. A pulmonary embolism had taken Reusch's life.

For a while Chergosky was unsure what to do with himself. Then he finally figured it out. He was to donate his entire farm, valued at around $4 million, to 4-H.

Watch the video above to also see Chergosky donate a scholarship in Ruesch's name. "I spoiled her, that's what she always told me," says Chergosky.

His love for the land is no match, for the love of his life. "This is all for her," he says.
