DETROIT -- The redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Silverado was named North American Truck of the Year here today at the opening press days for the North American International Auto Show.

The North American Car and Truck of the Year jury voted it best among three finalists, also including the Jeep Cherokee and Acura MDX SUVs.

The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray won Car of the Year, giving General Motors a sweep of this year's voting.

The awards aren't sponsored by or affiliated with the show. They are picked by 49 jury members representing a variety of print and online publications and members are independent to the point of contentiousness.

Redesigned for the 2014 model year, the Chevrolet Silverado benefits from weight reduction and a lineup of new, more fuel-efficient engines including a now-competitive V6.

In addition to its spacious four-door crew cab, the Silverado offers a two-door standard cab and an extended cab with a smaller rear seat and doors. Beyond those choices, Chevrolet also is testing the luxury pickup waters with the Silverado High Country, which offers even more features and upscale materials.

Silverado prices start at $25,575 and climb to $47,680 for a 4-by-4 High Country with a 6-foot, 6-inch bed.
