Aaron Hernandez is still available in ESPN fantasy football leagues

While on my phone last night perusing the waiver wire in my ESPN fantasy football league, intent on improving my lackluster tight end situation, I stumbled across a free agent listed as “A. Hernandez” right alongside Raiders third-round pick Clive Walford and new Browns TE Rob Housler.

Because this was on the mobile site, first names weren’t listed for space reasons. Thus, I assumed this “A. Hernandez” couldn’t possibly be “Aaron Hernandez,” the infamous New England Patriots star who was convicted of first-degree murder earlier this year and is currently serving a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Maybe there was an Adam Herandez or an Alex Hernandez or an Antoine Hernandez, anyone else with the same unfortunate name who happened to play in the NFL and was a free agent looking for a shot.

I quickly put the phone down and opened my laptop to confirm my optimistic hopes. There’s no way ESPN could possibly have that A. Hernandez available, after all — the A. Hernandez who, on a good day is forced to spend 19 hours a day in his cell and on a bad day can be in for up to 23 hours. That Aaron Hernandez can’t even watch a football game, let alone play in one.

So, what did I find online?

Yes, sir. Aaron Hernandez is currently available in ESPN fantasy football leagues. Amazing. The only thing they got correct is that Week 1 “BYE.” But it’s gonna be for a lot more than Week 1, fellas.

There are so many things in sports that are deemed unbelievable when, in fact, they are quite believable. ESPN still listing Aaron Hernandez in their fantasy game, two years after he was arrested and five months after he was sentenced to life in prison, is literally unbelievable. Sure, it’s an oversight, but a major, embarrassing and offensive one.

But the most absurd thing of all?

The convicted murderer is owned in 0.4% of leagues with an average draft position of No. 170. He’s also listed as “healthy,” just in case you were wondering whether he might have trouble finding the field.

Neither Yahoo! nor CBS offers Hernandez to fantasy owners. He wasn’t listed among the 1,144 names on Fox Sports either. And of the 156 tight ends available for drafting on NFL.com, Hernandez was a forgotten, ignored man, as he should be.
