England deletes mind-bogglingly sexist tweet about women's soccer team

The English Football Association tweeted out the following to mark the arrival of its women’s national team from the World Cup, where it finished third.2A46F1AE00000578-0-image-a-2_1436193406837

The tweet, which was later deleted, paraphrases a line in a story about the team’s homecoming. That line was also edited. The FA issued the following statement after the tweet was met with backlash from some of the English FA’s 1.2 million followers.

from the BBC:

“The full story was a wider homecoming feature attempting to reflect the many personal stories within the playing squad as has been told throughout the course of the tournament,” says an FA spokesman. “However, we understand that an element of the story appears to have been taken out of context and the opening paragraph was subsequently revised to reflect that fact.”

The half-hearted apology mirrors the lackluster effort of England’s men’s team in the 2014 World Cup. The 2015 performance from the Lionesses is the best outing for an English national team – male or female – in any World Cup since 1966.
