Seth Meyers named Emmys host

NBC's new late-night host Seth Meyers was named host of the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards, which not coincidentally airs on the network this year.

Meyers, 40, will emcee the broadcast on Aug. 25 (8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT), NBC announced late Thursday. The awards will air earlier than usual, as they did in 2010 — and on a Monday — partly to accommodate NBC's commitment to NFL football. Veteran awards producer Don Mischer was named executive producer.

Meyers, who segued from Saturday Night Live to Late Night with Seth Meyers in February, won three Emmys for SNL.

NBC's Paul Telegdy, president of late-night and alternative programming, in a statement said Meyers' "expertise in front of a live audience during his time at SNL" made him "the perfect choice" for the role. But the selection continues a recent tradition of naming hosts closely associated with the network that airs TV's top awards, which unlike other major awards shows rotates each year between NBC, Fox, CBS and ABC.

Neil Patrick Harris of How I Met Your Mother did the honors on CBS last year and in 2009; another late-night host, Jimmy Kimmel, hosted on ABC in 2012; and Glee's Jane Lynch led Fox's 2011 ceremony. Last time NBC had the awards, in 2010, Jimmy Fallon, then also of Late Night, hosted.
