Dean Miller grew up thinking of Kris Kristofferson as The Ugly Brown Monster.

"I guess that's what a guy with a shaggy beard looks like to a 3-year-old," says Miller, the son of the late Roger Miller, a Country Music Hall of Fame-caliber singer and songwriter who, along with Kristofferson and a few others, rewrote Nashville's rules for songwriting during the 1960s.

The younger Miller has followed in his father's footsteps, penning songs for Eric Church, Trace Adkins, George Jones and others. In December, he released his latest album, 'Til You Stop Getting Up, the video for which co-stars Kristofferson and is premiering at USA TODAY.

'Til You Stop Getting Up purports to tell the story of a Golden Gloves boxer named Jack Kelly, but, if you look closely at the poster at the start of the video, you might notice that it's Kristofferson, back in his own boxing days, before he wrote Me and Bobby McGee, Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down and Help Me Make It Through the Night and began an acting career that has spanned more than 40 years.

"When I wrote and recorded the song 'Til You Stop Getting Up, I was always imagining the images in the song," says Miller, who also produced and directed the video. "They really lend themselves to a video. I knew that Kris was a former Golden Gloves boxer, and I knew there was no one else but him to cast as the older fighter. I was shocked and excited when he said that he would do it! I began putting all the pieces together, financed, produced and directed the video myself."

Like many country songwriters, Miller considers Kristofferson one of his heroes, but he's also a family friend. "He has lived a life others can only dream of and crammed more life into one than I could squeeze out if I had a hundred chances," Miller says. "Personally and professionally, he has been someone I aspire to be like. His swagger, alone, as he walks into a room is awe inspiring!"

Miller is selling his 'Til You Stop Getting Up album through his website. A four-song digital EP is available via iTunes.
