Last week, shortly before the NBA playoffs began, Craig Sager announced that he was battling leukemia. On Sunday, his son filled in for him on the TNT broadcast and had a touching interview with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, usually known for his short interviews with Sager. Popovich took time out from the interview to send a heartfelt message to the veteran sideline reporter:
“I got to tell you you did a great job but I’d rather have your father standing out here,” the Spurs coach told Craig Sager Jr.
He then turned to speak into the camera: “Craig we miss ya, you’ve been an important part of all this for a long time, doing a great job. We want your fanny back on the court and I promise I’ll be nice.”
The TNT crew also paid tribute to Sager on Sunday.
