Police focus on new video in cop-killer manhunt
Law enforcement officials in northern Illinois said Friday they have new video footage that shows people near the area where a police officer was killed earlier this week.
Commander George Filenko, who heads the Lake County Major Crime Task Force, said the new video shows images of people police are interested in speaking with, but he stopped short of calling the individuals suspects in shooting death of Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz. The longtime police officer was found dead on Tuesday morning in a desolate area of the quiet town of Fox Lake, Ill., which is about 45 miles north of Chicago.
Filenko said that he believes several new videos acquired by investigators are “even more relevant” than one private security video police received earlier in the week.
Some of the new videos came from area traffic cameras, he said. The videos are being analyzed and processed by the FBI and the federal Department of Homeland Security. Filenko would not divulge any further detail about what can be seen on the videos.
“Let’s say there’s a commonality there and there’s an interest in those videos,” Filenko said.
Meanwhile, Schaumburg, Ill.-based Motorola Solutions announced a $50,000 reward to anyone who could provide police with information that leads to arrest and conviction of the assailants.
Gliniewicz, who had spent more than 30 years as police officer and was nearing retirement, was found in a part of town that is dotted with abandoned businesses and overgrown fields on Tuesday morning not long after he had told dispatchers that he had spotted three suspicious men. Gliniewicz only had given dispatchers the vaguest information about the suspects — two were white men and one was a black man — before his radio cut out.
Police turn over video to DHS in cop-killer hunt
More than 400 federal, state and local law enforcement officers combed the area for the suspects in the hours after his death, but were unsuccessful. Over the last several days, police have also bulked up patrols in the area and interviewed dozens of people in hopes of finding a lead on the assailants.
Police were preparing to search the scene of the crime for evidence again on Friday.

Filenko also said Friday that investigators have determined that a weapon found at the scene of the crime belonged to the police officer. He declined to say whether Gliniewicz’s gun was fired.
A funeral for Gliniewicz is set for Monday.
