Baylor's NCAA tournament uniforms say 'Sic 'Em' on the front

Adidas unveiled its line of NCAA tournament uniforms on Thursday. Gone is all the neon and Zubaz that caused so much consternation last year. Instead, Adidas took the radical step of dressing its storied programs in modern, but recognizable, uniforms. The kits for Kansas, Louisville, Michigan and Wisconsin look like they should. They’re classic. Sure, there are some new design elements on the shoulders and shorts, but these are hardly cause for commotion.

So good job, Adidas. This March won’t involve fans complaining about ridiculous jersey ele — wait a second. What’s that peaking out on the Baylor uniform? Look at the gentleman second from left. He’s behind the UCLA jersey. Why are the letters SIC poking out from his jersey. That letter combination isn’t anywhere in Baylor, Bears or University. Let’s take a closer look.

Oh. Oh no. Aside from the absurdity of putting an attack command normally associated with dogs on a college basketball jersey, the “Sic ‘Em Bears” slogan is in especially poor taste given past issues in Baylor’s basketball program. Sure,”Sic ‘Em” is an old school slogan and the aforementioned scandal happened years ago, but it’s a connection people outside Waco will immediately make when they see the jerseys.

That aside, the issue isn’t with the words, but with the entire concept of putting a lame slogan on a jersey. It’s an intriguing idea, especially for a school with a limited basketball history, such as Baylor, but this isn’t the XFL. Leave the slogans for the warmups, websites or hats.

But, as always, this sort of thing isn’t meant to appeal to people over the age of 30. Like Wu-Tang, these jerseys are for the children and I imagine they’ll be a hit with teenagers. And, on the bright side, if this whole thing catches on, it’d be cool to see Baylor alums like Robert Griffin III turn “Sic ‘Em Baylor” into the new “Ball So Hard University” when introducing themselves during primetime NFL games.

Kidding. RG3 and the woeful Redskins aren’t going to be on Sunday Night Football next year.
