Cardinals make history by hiring NFL's first female coach for preseason

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said during the owners meetings back in March that female coaches should be a part of the future of the NFL, and it looks like he’s taking steps toward making it a reality.

On Monday, Arians brought in Jen Welter, formerly on staff for the indoor football league team the Texas Revolution, for a training camp/preseason intern position coaching inside linebackers. Welter, who was a collegiate rugby player, and a professional football player of 14 seasons for the Women’s Football Alliance, is believed to be the first female to hold any sort of coaching position in the NFL.

Even though the position is only through preseason, It’s a huge step forward for the sport, and Arians is keeping an open mind.

From azcardinals.com:

“Coaching is nothing more than teaching,” Arians said Monday. “One thing I have learned from players is, ‘How are you going to make me better? If you can make me better, I don’t care if you’re the Green Hornet, man, I’ll listen.’ I really believe she’ll have a great opportunity with this internship through training camp to open some doors for her.”
