PHOENIX -- A Maricopa County Sheriff's Office detention officer who was shot in front of his home Thursday while getting ready for work has died, authorities said.

Details remain sketchy, but the shooting occurred at about 4:30 a.m. Phoenix police said the jail detention officer was wearing part of a uniform and went out to get his pickup truck started.

No one was in custody and there was no information on a motive, said Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump.

"It's really a whodunit," Crump said.

The employee's name was not released. The Sheriff's Office declined comment until a news conference set for Thursday afternoon.

Crump said investigators were looking into whether the shooting was connected to his job.

A man was seen running from the scene after neighbors heard shots and found the critically wounded man in his driveway.

Neighbors heard gunshots. The detention officer, who works in the food service area for the county jail system, was found with a gunshot wound.

The employee was rushed to the hospital in extremely critical condition, according to authorities. He later was pronounced dead.
