Landon Donovan airs Jurgen Klinsmann out while congratulating Abby Wambach

The United States clinched a World Cup final berth with an impressive (or fortunate, depending upon how you look at it) 2-0 win over Germany in the semifinal, and Landon Donovan congratulated them on the victory.

Sort of.

Ok. So. This is where things get so deliciously good.

For the second game in a row, and the third time this tournament, USWNT head coach Jill Ellis has started seasoned striker Abby Wambach on the bench (personally, I’m not mad at it– she’s struggled to find her shooting boots for this entire competition). Wambach came off of the bench for Megan Rapinoe late in the second half of the contest. You could say that Wambach is falling out of favor. I’m not saying that, but I’m saying that it could be said.

But anyway, doesn’t that sound familiar? A veteran striker being left out in the cold in a major competition?

It should, considering that Landon Donovan spent last summer at home watching Jurgen Klinsmann lead the USMNT to a second round exit at the hands of Romelu Lukaku and the Belgian National team.

Q.E.D., Donovan found a way to congratulate the USWNT and Abby Wambach on their World Cup final berth while totally blowing up Jurgen Klinsmann’s spot.

Very snarky. Much sarcasm. Very superb subtweeting.

UPDATE: Donovan only had half an hour to revel in his victory. Alexi Lalas spiked the return volley.
