Bono and Charlize Theron sat together at the official memorial service Tuesday for former South African President Nelson Mandela at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.

More than 60 heads of state have traveled to South Africa to attend a week of events commemorating the leader, who died on Dec. 5 at his home at age 95.

Theron, who was born in Transvaal Province in South Africa and first met Mandela in 2004, blew a kiss to the audience after she arrived.

Writing a first-person tribute to Mandela in the Irish Times, Bono noted: "As an activist I have pretty much been doing what Nelson Mandela tells me since I was a teenager. He has been a forceful presence in my life going back to 1979, when U2 made our first anti-apartheid effort. And he's been a big part of the Irish consciousness even longer than that."

CNN's Anderson Cooper talked to Bono on Monday. Cooper asked the U2 frontman what went through his mind when he first heard the news of Mandela's death?

"Stubborn until the end, you know? It was like he was playing this big — he was trying to outstare God, and finally, God blinked."

Also spotted arriving at the memorial: Model Naomi Campbell.

A clutch of royals also were in attendance as state representatives of their countries (along with their government leaders), including the Dutch King Willem Alexander; Norway's Crown Prince Haakon; Sweden's Princess Victoria; Danish Crown Prince Frederik; and Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito.
