Netflix will not be adding third-party advertising to the popular streaming service, company officials say.

CEO Reed Hastings and other execs found themselves putting out a fire that spread through tech media sites and on social networks after a TechCrunch report that some teaser ads were being tested among some users.

The story, based on earlier reporting by Cord Cutters News, came from reports from Netflix subscribers that they were seeing ads for other Netflix shows before and after watching other Netflix shows.

That led to a wave of stories -- and tweets -- pondering whether third-party ads were coming next. Hastings went to Facebook to dispel concerns saying, "No advertising coming onto Netflix. Period. Just adding relevant cool trailers for other Netflix content you are likely to love."

And Netflix offered this official company statement: "We are not planning to test or implement advertising on the Netflix service. For some time, we've teased Netflix originals with short trailers after a member finishes watching a show. Some members in a limited test now are seeing teases before a show begins. We test hundreds of potential improvements to the service every year. Many never extend beyond that."
