WASHINGTON — Senate leaders offered condolences Tuesday to Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., who lost a son in a Sunday plane crash.

Perry Inhofe, an orthopedic surgeon, would have turned 52 on Monday. The plane he was flying crashed Sunday near Owasso, Okla.

"The entire Senate family was saddened to hear of Dr. Inhofe's death," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., noting that the Inhofe family includes avid pilots.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., called it a "heartbreaking loss."

"Of course we're all thinking of Jim and (his wife) Kay and the heartfelt prayers of the entire Senate family is with them and the Inhofe family at this very, very difficult time."

Inhofe has served in the Senate since 1994. He serves on the Environment and Public Works Committee.

His office has not commented on his son's death.
