Spirit makes a 'mile-high' offer

Spirit Airlines' new ad pokes fun at Colorado legalizing marijuana.

You can always count on Spirit Airlines to make a cheeky statement about the most buzz-worthy news of the day.

In a nod to Colorado's legalization of recreational marijuana use for those 21 and older, Spirit is offering a deal today.

"The No Smoking Sign is off (in Colorado)," Spirit declared in its new ad on its website and emailed to registered users. "Get mile-high with $10 off your next flight. Fares so low they're barely legal in some states."

The airline is offering $10 off flights for travel from Jan. 13 to March 12 to any destination, not just Colorado. Flights must be booked by 11:59 p.m. tonight. A seven-day advance purchase is required. The offer is not valid for travel on Sundays.

"If you want to make a beeline for Colorado right now, we don't blame you – but we're up to take you to plenty of chill destinations," the airline said in the ad.

It's not the first time Spirit has built a campaign off current events.

Last summer, when it was revealed that then-New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner continued to send lewd messages to women online even after resigning from Congress for the same behavior in 2011, the airline sent an ad declaring that "The Weiner Rises Again!"

This latest ad urges travelers to "Book today...and be sure to pack some munchies."
