How Andy Murray hid, but still wore, his new wedding ring in return to tennis

Andy Murray returned to tournament tennis this weekend in Munich, a few weeks after marrying longtime girlfriend Kim Sears. The world No. 3 likely didn’t have high expectations at the clay-court BMW Open — no British man had won on the surface in almost 40 years. But maybe Murray was aided by a new addition to his kit: His wedding ring, which he attached to a shoelace.

Murray isn’t the first ATP player to attach a ring to his shoe — Robin Soderling did, among others — but is certainly the highest profile player to do so. After his marriage, Roger Federer was asked why didn’t wear a ring during play and he said it would affect his play, likely the same reason athletes of all sports wearing rings is the exception, not the rule. (One notable exception is Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.)

Murray ended up winning the tournament in a three-set thriller and became the first British man to win on clay since Buster Mottram in 1976. For his troubles, Murray was given an ugly, modern trophy and a sweet-lookin’ pair of lederhosen, which he immediately put on.

Notice the ring is back on his finger.

Oh, Murray also got a BMW too.
