'The Age of Adaline'

The movie may have the unexpected effect of encouraging women to embrace aging — since it could always be worse. And worse in this scenario is remaining 29 for nearly 80 years. While the idea of staying permanently on the brink of 30 and looking like Blake Lively hardly seems like a rough alternative, the emotional toll it takes on the title character is at the heart of this far-fetched, but conventional, tale. (** out of four stars)

'The Water Diviner'

Russell Crowe proves he has filmmaking skills with his directorial debut The Water Diviner, but a much more profound film about Australia's tragic role in 1915's Battle of Gallipoli was made in 1981. Diviner trips up with its contrived mystical undertones and predictable love story. (** out of four stars)
