That Paris Hilton 'tweet' on Mandela's death? Fake

Paris Hilton attends the premiere of 'The Bling Ring' at Directors Guild Of America on June 4, 2013 in Los Angeles, California. Her actual home plays a starring role in the film.

Relax, Twitterverse – Paris Hilton totally knows the difference between Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr.

A tweet -- seemingly from Hilton's account -- that read "RIP Nelson Mandela. Your 'I Have A Dream' speech was so inspiring. Amazing man" made the rounds on Thursday after Mandela's death. Naturally, mockery of the socialite for her apparent cluelessness quickly took off. One example (from hundreds):

"Paris Hilton has officially set blonde women back 200 years." -- @DrunkSocialite

But BuzzFeed discovered that the tweet was not genuine. It was spread by an account, @DeIetedTweets, that's now gone. (UPDATE: It seems to be back, for now.)

Hilton was on a plane to Miami when the fake tweet went out, her publicist told BuzzFeed.

Once she landed, Hilton tweeted condolences for Mandela:

"Just landed & heard the sad new about Nelson Mandela. He was a true Hero & the world is a better place because of him. May he rest in peace." -- @ParisHilton

She then blasted the creators of the fake tweet:

"Whoever made that stupid fake tweet lacks respect to the loss the world is mourning right now. Same goes for all the blogs who ran with it." -- @ParisHilton
