NASHVILLE — A college student accidentally shot himself in the head while playing with a cat and is in critical condition Tuesday at a local hospital, police said.

Craig Lambert, 19, was sitting at a picnic table at about 10 p.m. CT Monday in Hadley Park near Tennessee State University playing with a cat when his pistol slipped out of his pocket, according to Don Aaron, Metro police department spokesman.

The gun hit the ground and discharged, Aaron said. The bullet hit Lambert.

Lambert was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Detectives found one shell casing at the scene and recovered a gun, Aaron said. Police are trying to determine if that was the firearm that shot Lambert.
