Weekend TV: 'Cristela,' 'Going Clear'
Cristela
ABC, Friday, 8 ET/PT
ABC is running back-to-back episodes of this sitcom, the only broadcast family comedy available on a night that used to host many. Cristela is not a great show, at least not yet. But it's a promising one that could become better if nurtured. Let's hope ABC recognizes what it has in the show, and in its talented, telegenic star Cristela Alonzo, and gives both of them the time they need to develop.
Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief
HBO, Sunday, 8 ET/PT
This much-discussed documentary by Alex Gibney (The Armstrong Lie), based on the book by Lawrence Wright, combines personal stories from former church members with a biography of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where USA TODAY film critic Claudia Puig called it a "compelling, " "fascinating" and "scathing expose." Scientology believers and officials have other words for it.
The Walking Dead
AMC, Sunday, 9 ET/PT
Whatever slim hopes Rick and his friends had for a happy life in Alexandria are likely to unravel completely Sunday, as this remarkably popular series — cable's highest-rated ever — reaches its 90-minute season finale. Considering the carnage rate in an average Dead hour, you can only imagine the body count the show can rack up in an hour and a half.
