Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez struggled at the plate Monday night, going 0-for-4 against the Cincinnati Reds, but he more than made up for it in one astonishing play.
The Brewers clung to a 4-3 lead with two outs in the top of the ninth inning and a runner on first, when closer Francisco Rodriguez faced the always dangerous Joey Votto, who went deep — but he didn’t go yard.
And that’s only because Gomez made a fantastic, perfectly timed leaping catch at the wall to rob Votto of a go-ahead homer and give the Brewers a dramatic win. Check this out:
Notice Votto’s reaction; he thought it was gone. Notice how Rodriguez walks off the mound in disgust; he thought it was gone.
Instead, ballgame.
