Dad Rock podcast: 8 Rock Hall snubs

Patrick Foster and Jim Lenahan
USA TODAY
Dad Rock makes its picks for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducts its 2015 class on Saturday, and let's just say the selections aren't exactly the hall's "greatest hits."

Lou Reed and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts are worthy inductees, but the other six — Green Day, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Ringo Starr, the "5" Royales, Bill Withers, and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band — all feel like borderline honorees.

So this week, Dad Rock takes a hard look at the Rock Hall, offering advice to get it back on course. Co-hosts Patrick Foster and Jim Lenahan found several glaring omissions, even with 304 acts already enshrined. In this episode, Patrick and Jim play judge and jury and make their recommendations for next year's class.

Here are Patrick and Jim's picks for 2016:

New York Dolls. This pioneering band was punk rock before the term existed.

Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers. Richman's heartfelt, lo-fi songs influenced a generation of "alternative" rockers.

The Cars. This band bridged the gap between classic rock and new wave, created a unique sound and recorded several well-crafted pop songs.

Black Flag. The most influential band of the '80s hardcore scene, Black Flag redefined raw, rebellious rock for young audiences. And they cultivated a loyal audience without the benefit of a major label or mainstream media support.

The Specials. In the UK of the late '70s, the ska revival was a movement that rivaled punk. The Specials were the leaders of that scene.

Brian Eno. This singer's intelligent, experimental music was an important influence on such musical giants as Talking Heads and U2.

Sonic Youth. Like the Velvet Underground of a previous generation, this New York band never gained big commercial success but is revered by so many bands that did achieve platinum status (including a little group called Nirvana).

Gram Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers. Parsons practically invented alt-country, which is really a rock genre. And the music is just so beautiful.
