Ryan Phillippe wil play Bob Lee Swagger in the upcoming USA Network series, 'Shooter.'

USA Network Wednesday announced a series pickup for Shooter, with Ryan Phillippe (Secrets and Lies) taking the role Mark Wahlberg portrayed in the 2007 film of the same name.

Wahlberg (Lone Survivor) will be an executive producer of the drama, which also stars Omar Epps (House).

Shooter, based on the film and Point of Impact, the Bob Lee Swagger novel by Stephen Hunter, will feature Phillippe as Swagger, "an expert marksman living in exile who is coaxed back into action after learning of a plot to kill the president," according to the series description.

Epps plays Isaac Johnson, who had been Swagger's commanding officer in the Marines. "Now a Secret Service agent, (Epps) solicits Swagger’s expertise for a clandestine operation that has disastrous results," the description says.

“Shooter is an uncompromising exploration of the definition and evolution of a hero,” says Jackie de Crinis, USA's executive vice president for original programming. “The conspiracy and drama that unfolded throughout the first hour had us completely immersed, and we look forward to more.”
