NFL coaching hot seat rankings: Mike Pettine under pressure

Nate Davis

Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine calls for a fourth down call against the Baltimore Ravens at FirstEnergy Stadium.

The NFL season is heading into its final five weeks, so quite a few coaches are likely heading into their last weeks of employment in their present jobs.

Our weekly hot seat rankings:

1. Mike Pettine, Cleveland Browns: His club continues finding new and creative ways to lose – on a national stage no less – and doesn't even need Johnny Manziel's assistance to do so. Last week: 1

2. Chuck Pagano, Indianapolis Colts: Not only is his time in Indy coming to an end, the surging Houston Texans are suddenly threatening to accelerate his departure. Last week: 2

3. Chip Kelly, Philadelphia Eagles: Reports continue to swirl that the team is quitting on him. Losing the past two games by a 90-31 margin is compelling evidence. However maybe Kelly will be forced to dig in for the long haul with plum college jobs (USC, LSU) already disappearing. Last week: 4

4. Jim Caldwell, Detroit Lions: He's won three in a row after a Thanksgiving blowout of Kelly's Eagles. Caldwell may be making it hard for Detroit's next GM to fire him, though that guy will justifiably be wondering why this team was in hibernation for two months. Last week: 3

5. Jeff Fisher, St. Louis Rams: You can kiss his you-know-what ... even if his team is kissing its once-promising playoff chances goodbye once more. Rams are now 24-34-1 under Fisher. Last week: 6

6. Rex Ryan, Buffalo Bills: His spiraling defense just got buffaloed again to the tune of 413 yards and 30 points. But Rex is assigning blame to the video board operators at Arrowhead Stadium for their failure to promptly show challengeable plays. Grasping. At. Straws. Last week: 7

7. Sean Payton, New Orleans Saints: In the first game of the post-Rob Ryan era, it was Payton's offense that laid the egg in the Saints' third consecutive loss. New Orleans failed to score a touchdown Sunday for the first time since Payton came to power in 2006. Last week: Not ranked

Dropped out (for now): Mike McCoy, San Diego Chargers
