Red Sox agree to 7-year, $217 million deal with David Price

The Boston Red Sox and pitcher David Price have agreed to a 7-year, $217 million deal, a person familiar with the negotiations told USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because they had not been authorized to speak publicly.

The Boston Globe first reported that the side had reached a deal.

Price, 30, was one of the two best starters on the free-agent market along with Zack Greinke.

It's the largest average annual contract ever for a pitcher, surpassing Clayton Kershaw's seven-year, $210 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The left-hander went 18-5 last season with a 2.45 ERA, pitching for the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays.

Price was 9-4 with a 2.53 ERA with Detroit before being traded to Toronto on July 30 for Jairo Labourt, Matt Boyd and Daniel Norris.

With the Blue Jays, Price went 9-1 with a 2.30 ERA in 11 starts and helped Toronto to the American League East division title.

In the playoffs, Price was 1-1 with a 7.20 ERA in two games in the AL Division Series again the Texas Rangers and was 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA against the Kansas City Royals in the AL Championship Series, which the Blues Jays lost in six games.
