Wizards' John Wall wins 2015-16 NBA Cares Community Assist Award

John Wall won the 2015-16 NBA Cares Community Assist Award.

Washington Wizards point guard John Wall has been given the season-long 2015-16 NBA Cares Community Assist Award for his charitable efforts and year-long dedication to community outreach, the league announced Wednesday.

Wall, 25, has been extremely active in giving back to the community during his time in the NBA, particularly through his efforts with Bright Beginnings Inc. to help provide homeless children with eduction, shelter and food. He has been active in the fight against leukemia in support of his young friend, five-year-old Miyah Telemaque-Nelson, who lost her battle with Burkitt's lymphoma in December of 2014. He joined Miyah's family in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk in D.C. in October and sponsored the "Miyah's Troupe" walking team.

In addition, Wall funded the Passport to Manhood Program to teach young boys responsibility and leadership and teamed up with Sean John to provide high school students with suits and tuxedos for prom.

Wall will be presented with the award on Thursday afternoon by Owner and CEO of Monumental Sports Ted Leonsis, NBA Cares Ambassador Bob Lanier and Kaiser Permanente Senior Director of External Affairs Maritha Gay Kaiser. Kaiser Permanente will donate $25,000 to the John Wall Family Foundation.

This marks the fourth year that the league has recognized a season-long winner of the Community Assist Award, which has been given monthly since the start of the 2001-02 season. Wall also won the monthly award in October. Past season-long winners include Pau Gasol (2011-12), Dwyane Wade (2012-13),Stephen Curry (2013-14), and Russell Westbrook (2014-15).

Other nominees for this year's season-long award were Carmelo Anthony, Mike Conley, Anthony Davis, Andre Drummond, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, Zach LaVine, Damian Lillard, and Victor Oladipo.
