19 bizarre things Nick Kyrgios did in his U.S. Open match against Andy Murray

 1. Had John McEnroe call him an immature clown:

“You don’t want to be remembered as a clown. You want to be remembered as a player.” Once again, that was John McEnroe speaking.

2. Indirectly yelled at the crowd:

To chair umpire Carlos Ramos: “What the hell are they doing letting people in in the middle of the game? 15-love and they let 30 people in!” He also used more colorful language in between points to describe the absurdity of the crowd’s antics.

3. Took a nap at a changeover:

We’d say it was meditation but I find it hard to believe Nick Kyrgios is ever able to clear his mind of anything.

4. Won the coin toss and deferred the decision:

This was quickly forgotten, but Kyrgios won the pre-match coin toss, then deferred, letting Murray serve first, which is basically unheard of. Both players held in their first service game, but Kyrgios then broke in Murray’ second. He failed to consolidate though.

5. Still napping:

6. Hit the most unnecessary tweener of all time:

7. Took another nap:

8. Got more McEnroe smack-talk:

“The schtick is getting old,” he said, while comparing Kyrgios to a vaudeville act. J-O-H-N M-C-E-N-R-O-E, I said.

9. Hit a still-unnecessary tweener but then rocketed a tremendous forehand winner after it.

10. Made Anna Wintour smile:

11. Found time for even more shuteye:

12. Let the racquet slip out his hand by accident:

13. Threw the racquet at a ball in an attempt to — I don’t really know what the end goal was here:

14. Smashed that racquet after losing the second set:

Don’t worry — his “probation” from the ATP doesn’t apply to Grand Slams. That’s a good thing, because would have been gone for a while after his antics from just the first 30 minutes of the match.

15. Made McEnroe ever madder:

“If I were [Lleyton] Hewitt, I’d walk out of the stadium right now,” he said of the fellow Aussie who’s been helping Kyrgios with his game/attitude.

16. Complained that he was losing the ball in the lights on his ball toss:

They’ve played under the lights for 40 years, though this is the first time there’s been half a roof under the lights too. Either way, it didn’t seem to affect any of the four players from Monday night or Murray on Tuesday.

17. Won the third set, then took an extended break between the fourth set.

It was a lesson in how to kill your own momentum. Kyrgios was broken at love in the opening game of the fourth, then givem a warning for verbal abuse.

18. Went sleeveless:

19. Lost 5-7, 3-6, 6-4, 1-6:

On the bright side, he didn’t make a comment about anyone’s girlfriend so … baby steps.
