Report: Apple considers move into original programming

Netflix may have some fresh competition over original entertainment programming.

Customers browse inside Apple's new Canton Road store in the Tsim Sha Tsui district of Hong Kong, China, on Thursday, July 30, 2015. Apple opened its fourth store in Hong Kong.

According to Variety, Apple has held "preliminary conversations" with Hollywood executives about creating its own entertainment content. The report cites unnamed sources. Variety says Apple declined comment.

The report also claims Apple made a bid to snag the stars of BBC auto show Top Gear. The trio signed with Amazon. Citing a "high-level executive who talked with the company," the report says Apple wants to create its own development and production divisions. It's not clear whether Apple would focus on TV series or movies.

If Apple were to press forward with its own entertainment content, the tech giant would directly compete with Netflix, the streaming media giant leading the way with series including House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. Later this year, Netflix rolls out war drama Beasts of No Nation starring Idris Elba, while a slew of films from Disney begin rolling out on to the service next year.

Apple will also face competition from Hulu -- a joint venture of NBC, Fox and ABC -- and Amazon, which launched several original programs through its Instant Video platform.
