Bills GM: Football is a 'violent game that I personally don’t think humans are supposed to play'

Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley might be getting a call from the NFL offices on Tuesday after what he told a local radio station as his team’s OTAs began.

Whaley was asked by WGR550 if he was concerned Bills wideout Sammy Watkins was injury prone. Here’s his reply:

“I wouldn’t say that. If you look at his game log, he’s only missed three games. So is he injury prone? I wouldn’t say that. Are things going to come up with a guy like this? We hope that it gets limited in the future, but it’s the game of football. And injuries are part of it and it’s violent game that I personally don’t think humans are supposed to play and these things are going to come up. But we trust in our medical staff and we trust in each individual athlete to do what they have to do to get back on the field.”

Yes, an NFL general manager said he doesn’t believe humans are supposed to play football. I don’t think he’s saying it to throw out that the NFL should fold and football should be banned forever, just that these athletes are doing things their bodies aren’t made to do, which is more than reasonable.

I bet there are more than a few others around the league who believe the same thing, but they aren’t about to say that out loud, especially with what we’ve seen unfold with head injuries and CTE in recent years.
