10 Alan Rickman movies to watch besides 'Harry Potter'
Alan Rickman, we'll remember you. Always.
The acclaimed British actor died following a battle with cancer, his family confirmed to the Guardian Thursday. And while Rickman will always be remembered for playing Professor Severus Snape, one of the most complex and iconic characters from the Harry Potter film series, his long and storied career brought him roles ranging from villainy to romantic hero.
If you've only encountered Rickman's work through Potter (or if you just need some recommendations to add to your streaming queue) check out these 10 incredible films, which were lucky enough to feature Rickman. And then maybe watch all the Potters again, too. (Be warned, some of the clips contain NSFW language.)
1. Die Hard, 1988
Rickman has played a villain perhaps more iconic than Snape in Hans Gruber, the German terrorist making life difficult for Bruce Willis in the original Die Hard. Roles don't get much better than this.
2. Truly, Madly, Deeply, 1990
In this poignant and romantic film that might be too soon to watch, Rickman plays a man who dies and returns as a ghost to comfort her.
3. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, 1991
Long before his turn as Snape, his performance as the Sheriff of Nottingham gave us a sardonic villain to love to hate.
4. Sense and Sensibility, 1995
He stole our hearts in Ang Lee's adaptation of the Jane Austen novel (and that was alongside Hugh Grant).
5. Dogma, 1999
Alan Rickman in a Kevin Smith movie. Need we say more? (OK, we will, he plays The Metatron. Come on, folks.)
6. Galaxy Quest, 1999
Even if it didn't have Alan Rickman in it, Galaxy Quest would still be a triumphantly hilarious sci-fi spoof. But it does have Alan Rickman in it and the humor gets just a little better (and dryer).
7. Love Actually, 2003
Rickman took on a more everyday kind of villainy in the rom-com, where he played a middle-aged man who contemplates cheating on his wife.
8. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, 2005
Rickman doesn't appear in the sci-fi comedy, but he does voice Marvin the android to great effect. And great depression.
9. Sweeney Todd, 2007
If you haven't heard Alan Rickman, wielder of a voice that haunts children's nightmares, sing in a Stephen Sondheim musical, you haven't lived.
10. A Little Chaos, 2014
Rickman directed this period piece, where he plays King Louis XIV alongside Kate Winslet. It's one of his final films.
