Marlins 2B Dee Gordon suspended 80 games for PEDs

USA TODAY Sports
Gordon reaches home to score a run against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.

Miami Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon was suspended 80 games by Major League Baseball after testing positive for performance-enhancing substances.

Gordon tested positive for not one but two different performance enhancing drugs: testosterone and clostebol.

Gordon, the son of former major league pitcher Tom Gordon, had a key hit in Miami’s win over the Dodgers on Thursday. He’s batting .266 with six stolen bases this season.

He becomes the second notable player in less than a week to receive a suspension.

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Chris Colabello was suspended last Friday without pay, but denied any wrongdoing.

Clostebol is a synthetic steroid and a testosterone derivative. It was popular with East German athletes decades ago, as was turinabol, the steroid for which Colabello tested positive.

Gordon, a two-time All-Star, led the NL in hits (205), stolen bases (58) and batting average (.333). He signed a five-year, $50 million contract extension with the Marlins before the season.

His suspension was announced moments after the Marlins completed a four-game sweep of the Dodgers in Los Angeles. The Marlins acquired him from the Dodgers in a six-player trade in December 2014.

“Dee Gordon is a very important part of our team, and we all love him and support him,” Marlins president David Samson said. “That said, I don’t like or condone what he did. He is an important member of this organization and will be for many years to come. It’s a huge, huge disappointment to the kids, to our fans, to his teammates and to everyone in our organization every single day.

“He will be back 80 games from now, and he will be welcomed back to this organization. But in the interim period, we expect him, and we are positive that he will do everything that’s necessary to make it up to his fans, to his teammates and to this organization.”

Gordon will sacrifice about half of his $3 million salary in 2016 and won't be able to defend his titles.
