10 times Matt McGorry was our social justice bae

Jaleesa M. Jones

Matt McGorry may play a chump  a correctional officer on Orange is the New Black, but he is so much more than Officer John Bennett. Unlike John, who shirked his responsibilities to #prisonbae Dayanara Diaz (Dascha Polanco), Matt embraces his rising star and uses it to illuminate social issues.

In this intellectual thirst trap posted yesterday, Matt showed off the latest addition to his #goodreads list: The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander.

In the full Facebook post (which can be accessed here), Matt shares how the book elucidated the ways in which racism has been codified in the U.S. criminal justice system and made him confront his own privilege — and then we swooned and started thinking about all of the times Matt proved he was socially conscious.

1. When he wasn't here for gender expectations:

2. When he gently explained that men can be feminists...

3. ...but acknowledged (via repost) that women receive more vitriol for embracing the label:

4. When he addressed the wage gap...

5.  ...and Viola Davis' historic speech about the disparate opportunities afforded to women of color:

6&7. When he explained why #AllLivesMatter is totally missing the point ... and pointed out the parallels between race-based and gender-based forms of victim-blaming:

8. When he supported Amber Rose's Slut Walk in Los Angeles:

9. When he supported trans women...

10. ...but also wasn't here for cisnormative beauty ideals:

#StayWoke.
