The top games for college football teams seeking bowl eligibility

Erick Smith

The NCAA hasn't announced its plan for placing 5-7 teams in bowl games, but the organization better be making preparations for the possibility. The likelihood of all 80 postseason spots being filed by six-win or better teams is on shaky ground after another weekend of unexpected results.

Will Virginia Tech have the opportunity to put Frank Beamer on their shoulders in a bowl game?

The final full weekend of the regular season will have a huge bearing on whether losing teams have a chance to extend their seasons.

Here’s how the picture stands after Friday with the 127 teams that started the season eligible for bowl games:

► 74 teams have at least six wins and are eligible to compete in bowl games.

► 43 teams already have seven losses and are out of consideration for now.

► The six remaining available spots must be filled by the remaining 10 teams.

On Friday Washington and Tulsa each improved to 6-6 to clinch bowl eligibility, while three teams — Nebraska, Missouri and Buffalo — each lost to fall to 5-7.

On Saturday Virginia Tech earned its sixth victory to become bowl eligible for the final time in coach Frank Beamer's career.

Here are the biggest remaining games Saturday for teams hoping to reach the postseason:

2015 college football TV schedule

Illinois (5-6) vs. Northwestern
Minnesota (5-6) vs. Wisconsin
Indiana (5-6) at Purdue

Seven Big Ten teams are set for the postseason. The conference could have three more representatives if things break a certain way on Saturday.

The lllini beat the Wildcats in this exact situation last year. The Gophers could catch the Badgers in an emotional lull after their controversial loss to Northwestern. The Hoosiers get the easiest opponent of the quartet as they attempt to make their first bowl trip since 2007 and just the second for the program since 1993.

Kentucky (5-6) vs. Louisville

All seven SEC West teams have qualified for the postseason. The SEC East only has three, but has two chances to at least correct some of the imbalance. Emotions will be high for the Tigers. Kentucky hasn't been to a bowl in five years and needs to beat its in-state rival to avoid a sixth loss in its last seven games.

East Carolina (5-6) vs. Cincinnati

The Pirates have only missed a bowl in one season since 2005. That impressive run is on the line when the Bearcats come into town. This could be one of the more exciting games of the weekend with both teams being offensive-minded and both defenses struggling.
