Broncos TE Owen Daniels weighing retirement

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning isn’t the only veteran player who is expected to contemplate retirement in coming weeks.

It’s something that tight end Owen Daniels admitted it’s something he’ll have to think about, too, now that the Broncos won Super Bowl 50.

“Of course, of course. That's definitely an option,” Daniels told USA TODAY Sports. “But I'm a man of my word, I signed a three-year deal, so I'd like to keep playing. I feel good enough as long as I can get some work done on my 33-year-old knees.”

Daniels has no meniscus in his left knee, though he said it’s his right one that’s been more painful throughout the duration of the 2015 season, his 10th in the NFL.

“I've got to take care of my body, first and foremost. I'm enjoying this (Sunday night) and for as long as possible, through the parade and everything. And then I'm going to take care of my body, my knees superficially, both of them. Get those things healed up and then move on from there,” Daniels said.

Daniels had just one catch, for 18 yards, in the Broncos’ 24-10 win over the Carolina Panthers, but it was a big one because it came on the first play of the game on Denver’s field goal drive. Manning targeted him with just one more pass in the game. Daniels caught two touchdowns in the AFC Championship Game win against the New England Patriots two weeks ago.

Rogers: No, Eli Manning wasn't jealous of Peyton winning Super Bowl

But the lack of stats in the Super Bowl didn’t make the celebration any less sweet. Daniels’ first child, Henry, was born this summer, and the Super Bowl marked the baby’s first ever game.

“We thought hey, who knows if this will happen again. I mean, it's past his bedtime here but, he loved the confetti.” Daniels said. “I got to hold my little man down there, and he was just mesmerized.”
