A snowstorm moving through the Northeast was creating headaches for fliers at some of the nation’s busiest airports Friday.

Big U.S. carriers were waiving change fees for flights to the region, where several inches of snow were possible for airports around New York City and in New England.

New York's LaGuardia was bearing the brunt of the disruptions as of 3:40 p.m. ET. About 315 flights -- or about 25% of the entire day's schedule -- had been canceled and another 315 delayed, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.

Farther north,  about 20% of the day’s flights at been canceled at Boston Logan, though officials there said via Twitter that most of those cancellations were on flights to or from New York.

Elsewhere, about than 5% of the day's flights were canceled at Newark Liberty, New York JFK, Cleveland, Raleigh/Durham and Richmond, Va., according to FlightAware. The Cleveland, Raleigh and Richmond disruptions were likely part of the ripple effect from cancellations in New York and the Northeast.

Delays had also become a significant problem at both JFK and Newark, with more than 1 out of every 5 flights not canceled operating behind schedule, according to FlightAware.

Delta operates a hub LaGuardia and also has a significant presence at Boston. JetBlue operates its second-busiest hub at Boston. Newark Liberty is a major connecting hub for United. JFK is a hub for three airlines: American, Delta and JetBlue.

Airlines issued winter-weather policies for customers traveling through big airports in the greater New York City area and in New England. The policies varied by carrier, but generally allowed customers to make one change to their itineraries – with some restrictions – without paying a change fee or a fare increase.
