Johnny Depp explains 'the darkest period' of his life

Johnny Depp arrives at the Nov. 21 premiere of 'The Danish Girl' at Westwood, California.

It was 2007. Johnny Depp was finishing the first month of production on Sweeney Todd when his daughter, Lily-Rose, was hospitalized for kidney failure — induced by an E. coli infection. She spent nine days in London's Great Ormond Street hospital.

"I’ve known darkness in my life, but that was darkest period of my life," Johnny said during his appearance on The Graham Norton Show.

But, as the Pirates of the Caribbean actor acknowledges, Lily-Rose's health scare bolstered his commitment to visiting the hospital in Jack Sparrow mode.

“I’d always kind of done these visits but after that, the visits became more and more important because the kids — bless them, you know? They’re so strong. They’re so courageous, but the parents are the ones who are slowly dying. And to be able to bring a smile or a giggle to these people, it means everything in the world to me.”
