Tony Romo re-injures collarbone, could miss rest of season

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (9) leaves the game with an injury during the second half of an NFL game against the Carolina Panthers on Thanksgiving at AT&T Stadium.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Tony Romo might have played his last snap in what almost certainly now looks like a lost season for the Dallas Cowboys.

Coach Jason Garrett said after Thursday’s 33-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers that X-ray results on Romo’s injured left collarbone – the same one the quarterback broke in Week 2 – were inconclusive.

“We’ll see tomorrow after the CT scan,” Romo said. “Obviously it doesn’t feel good. It had a similar-type feeling (as when the Week 2 break occurred). It was tough. I worked hard to come back and get acclimated to the game.”

When Romo was sacked by linebacker Thomas Davis in the final seconds of the third quarter, the quarterback landed squarely on the left shoulder. He used his right fist to pound the turf. The severity of the injury will be known Friday morning, but ESPN's Ed Werder reported Romo would miss the remainder of the season.

“We still have a lot to learn on Romo,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. “It’s in the same shoulder that he was out five to six weeks for. That is a concern from the standpoint of the games ahead. We just need more information. We got an X-ray, but we need more than that. He certainly hurt his shoulder.”

Romo played a disastrous first half, throwing three interceptions – including two returned for touchdowns. In the first six quarters since returning from his original broken collarbone, Romo threw five interceptions.

He showed some rust in Sunday’s 24-14 victory over the Miami Dolphins, but the Cowboys played well enough to beat a middling team. They had little chance Thursday against a stifling defense, one that almost completely took wide receiver Dez Bryant out of the game.

“I didn’t give us a chance,” Romo said about completing 11 of 21 passes for 106 yards. “It will eat at me.”

Panthers stuff Cowboys to remain unbeaten

In the days leading up to Romo’s return, the quarterback said there was a risk returning because, though healed, the collarbone had a greater chance of re-breaking.

It remains uncertain whether Romo re-broke the collarbone. But even in the middling NFC East, the Cowboys’ playoff hopes are virtually nonexistent. They are 3-8, and could fall a full three games behind the New York Giants this week.

And if they’ve shown anything this season, it’s this: They are winless without Romo.
