Ryan Reynolds' butt-baring proposal is just one side of 'Deadpool'

Wade (Ryan Reynolds) has an unusual proposal for Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) in 'Deadpool.'

Ryan Reynolds definitely enjoys his showing off his booty in Deadpool, his supremely quirky Marvel superhero movie in theaters Friday.

Not only did Reynolds memorably extol Deadpool's spandex-suited posterior in the viral December trailer, but his movie alter ego Wade Wilson also makes a heartfelt, yet oddly-timed, proposal to his beloved Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) — with his bare butt as apparent as his giant toy ring in the R-rated film.

But that's just one (highly noticeable) side of the fast-talking superhero Deadpool.

A rundown of his many movie looks:

Wade Wilson, buff

The Special Forces operative-turned-mercenary Wilson looks fighting buff before falling mortally ill. Reynolds, 39, is suitably fit as Wilson, displayed in a number of shirtless shots. But Reynolds says he didn't want to overtrain for the character. Rather, he focused on being capable enough to perform extensive action sequences without injury.

"I'm getting old, so I was trying not to get hurt, which is what my training regiment became," says Reynolds. "When I was in my 20s, it was like, 'I want to be Arnold Schwarzenegger,' which was totally unrealistic even then."

As for the revealing proposal shot, Reynolds says he had "no problem" giving a show.

"That's nothing compared to half of my movies," says Reynolds.

Wade Wilson, post-trauma

After Wilson undergoes brutal treatment to bring out inner mutant cells and gains super body-repairing powers, he turns into the hideously damaged Deadpool. Shooting scenes that featured his scarred face and full body required up to eight hours of intensive makeup sessions.

"I'm not going to lie, it was a massive pain in the (butt) to get that on each day, especially when covered head-to-toe naked in scars," says Reynolds.

The look also freaked out his toddler daughter James, 14 months old, who caught a glimpse of Dad at work.

"She did cry when she saw me in the scar makeup," says Reynolds. "It was her Dad's voice, but the face looked like it was deep-fried. She had some issues with that."

Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) is ready for battle, joined by Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand).

Deadpool, suited up

Reynolds says he "literally wept" when he was presented with his Deadpool costume. It was a sign that the movie was being done true to the comic character.

Unlike the suits of other Marvel stars such as Iron Man, it was actually comfortable to wear and required only 10 minutes to get geared up. Talking through the mask, crucial for the fast-talking Deadpool, was "a cinch" for Reynolds.

"After a while, it becomes a second skin," says Reynolds. "When I got the mask and suit on, I kind of became Deadpool."

The main problem was breaking in the new vinyl suits. The filmmakers made nine Deadpool outfits and destroyed seven during stuntwork. Each time Reynolds had to switch to a new suit, it required 40 minutes to squeeze into it and about six hours to truly break it in.

"I needed that time to warm up so I could move as quickly as I needed for the action," says Reynolds. "If I had to wear a new suit, I would get to work a few hours early. I'd sit in my trailer with the heat on to get that suit fully worked in."
