Fans won't stop yelling at Dikembe Mutombo after he gave Aaron Gordon a '9'

TORONTO — The longer legacy of the 2016 Slam Dunk Contest is yet to be seen but for Dikembe Mutombo the immediate impact can be seen on his Facebook page.

Mutombo was one of three judges to give Aaron Gordon a “9” after the Magic player’s reverse dunk in the contest’s extra rounds. Zach LaVine then went through his legs on his final dunk to earn a perfect score and take home the title. Many fans, however, weren’t thrilled with the results because they thought that Gordon’s previous dunks when he used a mascot and a hoverboard as a prop were above and beyond.

“I think I did a good job as a judge,” Mutombo said during a Mountain Dew-sponsored Court Vision Interactive Virtual Realty Art Experience. “You know I have a lot of people punching me from left to right. I went to my Facebook, I had a lot of people that left me messages. Some of them were nice. Some of them was medium and the others were I don’t know how to describe it but I’m going to live with it.

“I only gave the guy one ‘9’ but I get killed on that one score,” he said, shaking his finger. “Anything else I did was OK but that one.”

Count Charlotte guard Jeremy Lamb as one of those people who couldn’t believe that Gordon didn’t walk away with the trophy. “His dunk was crazy,” he said. “It was crazy, I think he should have won for sure. But of course Zach LaVine, he got crazy bounce too.”

LaVine came through the event only hours after posting a photo with the rapper Drake. He said he’d gotten four or five hours of sleep after the controversial win over Gordon. “This year just brought it to a whole other level, what me and Aaron did,” he said. “(The Dunk Contest) definitely has to be (back), I don’t know if people can top that though.”

He said he came up with his dunks at the last minute, a contrast to Gordon who said he had been planning for weeks with the help of his friends. They sent clips of some of the best dunks and he worked out a routine with one of the men who plays his team’s mascot.

So should he have won? “It’s hard to say,” Gordon said. “Zach went through the legs, from the free throw line. I don’t know a lot of people in the world that can do that.”

LaVine said when he saw Gordon fly over the mascot he had no idea what he was going to do. After all, how do you top someone flying over a mascot with a hoverboard? “It could have been either way,” he said of the results. “I think we almost should have shared it though, it was crazy.”
