Wilmer Flores, thinking he's been traded, reduced to tears on field while still playing for Mets

Update: Despite initial reports, Flores was not traded on Wednesday night.

The New York Mets’ reported deal to send shortstop Wilmer Flores and injured pitcher Zach Wheeler to the Milwaukee Brewers for outfielder Carlos Gomez fell through on Wednesday night, but during the Mets’ matchup against the Padres, it looked like Wilmer Flores was playing his last game at Citi Field.

Flores, who was still in the infield when he heard the news of the potential trade, seemed inconsolable.

However, the deal fell apart, and Flores’ tears, as well as the heartwarming ovation he received from Mets fans during the game, were all for nothing — at least for now.

Mets fans raucously cheered for Flores during his seventh-inning at bat, which confused both the player and his manager, Terry Collins, who at the time had not heard the speculation. Flores was seen crying when he returned to his position in the eighth.

“During the game, I heard I was getting traded and got all emotional,” he said. “When I came in, they told me there was no trade.”
